Broom Finish
The default, and the right answer for most driveways. A broom is dragged across the fresh surface to leave fine ridges. It is the most slip-resistant option, the cheapest, the easiest to patch, and it hides ordinary wear. Direction matters slightly: drawing the broom across the slope helps water shed at the surface rather than running in the grooves.
Exposed Aggregate
The top paste is removed to reveal the stone in the mix, giving a textured, speckled surface with good traction and a more custom look than broom. It hides staining well. Trade-offs: it is rougher underfoot and harder to shovel, and it generally wants a sealer to keep the stone looking sharp.
Stamped Concrete
Mats press a pattern into the fresh slab — often a stone, slate or brick texture — usually with color. It is the most dramatic option and the most demanding: it costs meaningfully more, needs a film-forming sealer maintained over time, can be slicker when wet unless a traction additive is used, and any future crack or patch is difficult to blend into the pattern.
Color: Integral vs. Surface
Integral color is mixed through the concrete, so chips and wear show the same tone underneath — the more durable route. Surface-applied color hardeners and stains offer richer effects but sit in the top layer, where they eventually wear. Any color reads differently once cured and sealed than it does on a sample chip, so look at cured examples, not brochures.
Borders, Bands and Aprons
A saw-cut band, a contrasting stamped border, or a decorative apron at the street gives most of the visual payoff of a fully decorative driveway while leaving the main surface as easy-to-maintain broom finish. Finish Does Not Replace Structure
