When to Replace a Concrete Driveway
Replacement is generally warranted when the slab has failed beyond what repair can economically address — widespread cracking, significant settlement, extensive spalling, or repeated repairs on the same driveway. Not every cracked driveway needs to be replaced, and we'll say so if repair is the better financial call.
Cracked and Deteriorated Driveways
Multiple cracks across most of the slab, cracks wider than a nickel that continue to grow, and slabs that have shifted at joints typically indicate replacement rather than surface repair.
Driveway Removal and Disposal
Existing concrete is broken out, hauled off, and disposed of. Site access and any obstacles (fences, landscaping, existing utilities) are noted during the site walk so removal doesn't create surprises.
Base and Drainage Evaluation
Once the existing slab is out, the base is evaluated. If the old driveway failed because the base underneath was inadequate or drainage pushed water into the wrong place, that gets addressed before new concrete is placed — otherwise the new slab will fail the same way the old one did.
New Driveway Layout Options
Replacement is a natural time to consider widening the driveway, adding a parking pad, or adjusting the apron transition. Layout changes are often less expensive when done during a scheduled replacement than as a separate project later.
